Last Thursday on the 4th of July, I was at the Chiostri di San Barnaba (here) in Milan for a real Independence Day Party (the first I’ve ever attended) in a true 50s American style. Rock ‘n’ Roll live music, USA decorations with stars and stripes everywhere and a tempting menu that included traditional and revisited dishes of the American cuisine: bagels with salmon, fried chicken, backed potatoes, mini hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as many types of meat cooked on the grill, all washed down with gallons of the American Miller beer! Last but not least a multitude of amazing and delicious cakes and cupcakes just like the American pastry can do.
Actually the party was the occasion to celebrate the new chef of the Chiostri’s restaurant Giancarlo De Simone. Milanese by birth, but of Neapolitan origin, backed by a twenty-year career and a training in the cooking field together with a great starred chef as Pietro Leemann, De Simone offers a menu with traditional, natural and genuine dishes. His cuisine shows the chef’s respect for the raw materials which results in a continuous study of different kinds of food combinations and in the proposal of only seasonal products.
More over the Chiostri di San Barnaba is a place full of charm. The ancient building is a former Franciscan convent of the fifteenth century divided into different cloisters. Hidden in the heart of Milan it is often unknown even by those who live in the city. Especially in the hot summer period I highly recommend this place even just for a drink or an aperitif. It represents an opportunity to spend a pleasant evening in a charming and unconventional historic location.

Giovedì 4 luglio mi trovavo ai Chiostri di San Barnaba (qui) a Milano, per un Independence Day Party (il primo a cui abbia mai partecipato) in perfetto stile americano anni ’50. Rock ‘n’ Roll live music, scenografia a stelle e strisce e un invogliante menù a tema che comprendeva tipici e rivisitati piatti della cucina statunitense: bagels al salmone, pollo fritto, backed potatoes, mini hamburger e hot dog, nonché un’infinità di tipi di carne cotta alla griglia, il tutto innaffiato da fiumi di birra Miller, americana doc! Last but not least la mia serata è stata amabilmente allietata da una moltitudine di dolci e dolcetti dall’aspetto accattivante e invitante, come solo la pasticceria d’oltreoceano sa fare.
Con questa festa si è voluto in realtà celebrare l’arrivo del nuovo chef Giancarlo De Simone presso il ristorante dei Chiostri. Milanese di nascita, ma napoletano di origine, con alle spalle una ventennale carriera e una formazione sul campo al fianco di un grande chef stellato come Pietro Leemann, De Simone propone un menù punto di incontro fra la cucina tradizionale e quella naturale e genuina, frutto di un condiviso rispetto per le materie prime che si traduce in un continuo studio di abbinamenti da una parte e nella proposta di soli prodotti di stagione e nella scelta di fornitori e produttori storici di Milano dall’altra.
La location dei Chiostri è poi deliziosa, si tratta di un ex convento francescano del XV secolo, nascosto nel pieno centro di Milano e spesso sconosciuto anche da chi in questa città ci vive. Ve lo consiglio spassionatamente, soprattutto nel caldo periodo estivo e anche solo per un aperitivo. Rappresenta l’occasione giusta per trascorrere una piacevole serata in una suggestiva cornice storica al di fuori del comune.
